Privacy
Short version: you can report anonymously, your photos and videos are only seen by moderators, and we never sell or share your personal details.
What we collect
- Your evidence. The photos and videos you upload. Photos are re-saved in your browser before upload, which removes hidden metadata such as GPS coordinates and phone details. Videos are uploaded as they are and may contain that metadata.
- Report details. The supermarket, branch, location, time you saw the waste, your estimates of the amount, and anything you write in the description. We also record the time your report reached us.
- Optional details about you. A name and Instagram handle (only if you turn anonymous off) and an email address (only if you want a moderator to be able to contact you). Your email is never published.
- A scrambled network identifier. To stop spam we keep a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address. We can't turn it back into your IP address.
How we use it
- Moderators review every report. Approved reports appear on the public map and in totals as the supermarket, branch, approximate location (about 100 metres), date and estimated amount. Names, emails, descriptions and media are not published automatically.
- If you use "Estimate it for me", smaller copies of up to four of your photos (or a still frame from a video), plus any notes you type in that box, are sent to an AI model, Claude by Anthropic, through Netlify's AI Gateway. It lists the food it can see and estimates its shop value. Your name, email and location aren't sent. Anthropic doesn't use this data to train its models. You can skip the estimate and fill in the amounts yourself.
- With the consent you give when you submit, approved photos and videos may be used in campaigns against food waste, including on social media. If you asked to be credited, we'll credit the name or handle you gave.
How long we keep it
- Reports whose uploads were never finished are deleted automatically after 24 hours.
- Spam-prevention records are deleted after 2 days.
- AI estimates that never become part of a submitted report are deleted after 2 days. Estimates attached to a report are kept with it so moderators can compare them with your figures.
- Reports and media are kept for as long as the campaign runs, unless you ask us to delete them.
Where it's stored
The site runs on Netlify. Photos and videos are stored in Netlify's EU (Frankfurt) region. Map tiles and place search come from OpenStreetMap. To keep out spam bots, the report form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks your browser and connection (including your IP address) when you submit; Cloudflare doesn't receive your report. Both receive your search or map view, not your report.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask to see, correct or delete your report and any personal data in it. Quote the reference shown when you submitted.
Contact details for data requests will be published here before public launch.
Staying safe and legal
Please only film from public places or places you're allowed to be. Don't climb fences, open locked bins or enter private or staff-only areas, and don't take food from bins. Don't film people's faces where you can avoid it.
